GTCO Fashion Weekend 2024 Street Style Recap: Hits, Misses, and Bold Fashion Choices

One of the most exciting aspects about the yearly fashion event is the street style of the attendees. Fashion enthusiasts gathered from all over, taking advantage of the stage set by such an event to showcase their individuality, creativity and love for fashion and art. Whether they be over the top and unconventional creations, to more traditional and classic styles and designs but with a twist, it's always interesting to see the different directions the participants go in and how much fun they have expressing themselves.
The fashion on the scene seems to get more brazen each edition and we saw some really interesting pieces this year. From painted bodies, to hoses and nets over the head (that straightaway makes me think of kanye), to towels (a fan of Doja perhaps?), and unlikely accessories like gas masks.

One of the looks that stood out featured a crop top decorated with multicolor paillettes worn with denim pants, but what really took it to the next level was the styling- an Aso-oke gele, shawl and handbag- and though there were a lot of colors at play, it all somehow melded together quite nicely without giving off garish. Another look was a distressed 2 piece knit fit (a hooded crop top and mini skirt) that was also elevated with clever styling and accessorizing. The thigh high boots combined with the beaded elements of the top and the oversized glasses made the look cohesive and created a high fashion moment.

The men also showed up and showed out, and one of the notable looks was an all black 3 part outfit that featured a sheer embroidered sleeveless top, faux fur shaggy pants and a long overcoat. The star of the moment for me was the finely tailored overcoat and the stunning design details on it, from the splash of color at the front, to the scorpion embellishment on the shoulder- just SUBLIME. The spike detail on the gloves and shoes was also a nice touch, I personally would have done without the bag but the whole look was a solid 10.

Yet another all black outfit we saw on the scene was worn by Samuel Otigba. The look sported a sleeveless vest top, wide-legged collette pants with a skirt-like wrap at the front and a Fila. The mix of traditional and modern elements was done seamlessly, in a way that was both elegant and sleek, grabbing your attention without doing too much.

Not all the looks were a hit however and one of such was a deconstructed, mismatched outfit combination of denim pants and a crop top. I think I get the vague idea of what he could have been going for, especially with the pants but a little less would have done more for the look. There also was a Vivienne Westwood-esque outfit that felt almost, but not quite there. You could see the vision but the final effect was just not harmonious enough.

We saw some prevalent trends amongst the crowd, like bold colors. Vibrant reds- one of which was worn by Doris Ogah and was a stunning two piece outfit with a sheer, floor length shawl/wrap situation; an extremely flattering olive green number on thestylishsope and even an orange outfit that referenced the GTCO brand.

Other trends were bold and dramatic hairdos, and the use of fabric or unlikely materials to create unique textures on outfits.

Everyone present put on a great show and the atmosphere was lively, colorful and inclusive; very characteristic of the annual event that has undoubtedly become one of the most anticipated in the African fashion calendar. The quality of styles and level of creativity only get better each year and we look forward with bated breath to what the coming year will bring.
